Every registered domain has at least 2 Name Server records that show where it's hosted i.e. by using these records you direct your Internet domain to the servers of a particular website hosting company. This way, you've got both your website and your e-mails handled by the same company. On the lower level of the Domain Name System (DNS), however, there are lots of other records, for example A and MX. The first one shows which server manages the site for a given domain address and is always an IP address (123.123.123.123), while the latter reveals which server handles the e-mails and is always an alphanumeric string (mx1.domain.com). As an example, when you enter a domain name in your web browser, your request is directed through the global DNS system to the provider whose NS records the domain address uses and from there you will be directed to the servers of another service provider if you have set an IP address of the latter as an A record for your domain address. Having separate records for the website and the e-mails means you could have your site and your emails with two different providers if you'd like.

Custom MX and A Records in Website Hosting

If you have a website hosting account through our company and you would like to switch either your website or your emails to an alternative company, it is going to take you literally only 2 mouse clicks to do this. Our Hepsia CP provides an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domain names and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you are going to be able to see and change the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you decide to use a different e-mail provider and they ask you to create more MX records than the standard two, it won't take more than a couple of clicks either to add them. You could also set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the bigger the priority a certain MX record will have. The propagation of any record that you modify or create is not going to take more than several hours and if required, you will also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which reveals how long a record will stay active after it is modified or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

The Hepsia hosting CP, provided with our Linux semi-dedicated hosting, allows you to view the A and MX records for any of the domains or subdomains in your account and if needed, to edit any of them or create new ones. Handling these records is quite easy as all domains/subdomains will be listed alphabetically, so modifying a record is as simple as entering it in a box and saving the change. Setting up a new one takes only a few more clicks and if you experience any issues, you can check out our video tutorials on how to create A and MX records. Our system is user-friendly enough to be used by people with no previous experience, yet advanced enough to offer you total control over all records and to enable you to have different A records even for domain.com and www.domain.com. If you are moving your e-mails to a different company and they ask you to set up more than 2 different MX records, you can choose the priority of each one.
